Eastbound Theatre, a division of the Milford Arts
Council (MAC), will present the spring show of its 29th
season, Silent Sky by Lauren Gunderson. Directed by
Nancy A. Herman, the show will be performed at the
MAC June 7th through June 22nd, 2024. Friday and
Saturday performances are at 7:30 pm; Sunday
matinees are at 2 pm.
Silent Sky tells the true story of 19th-century
astronomer Henrietta Leavitt and explores a woman’s
place in society during a time of immense scientific
discoveries. Henrietta, working as part of a team of
women “computers” at the Harvard Observatory, uses
her free time to try and measure the light and distance
of stars.
While she pursues her work, she also takes
measure of her life on Earth trying to balance her
dedication to science with the possibility of love. Silent
Sky is filled with mathematics and music as Henrietta
and her female peers change the way we understand
the heavens and Earth.
Director Nancy A. Herman explains, “Silent Sky is both
a beautiful and a thought-provoking play. I love its
contradictions! It deals with a serious subject – gender
inequality — but is also filled with romance and humor!
It is a simple story about complex ideas. It celebrates
the contributions of women from a time when their
ideas were rarely given any consideration or credit.”
The cast features Rachel Dalton of Trumbull,
Alicia
James of Guilford, Molly McCullough of Milford, Brodey
Ott of Stratford, and Emily Yates of New Haven.
Playwright Gunderson’s works focus on female figures
in history, science, and literature.
She has had
more than 20 plays produced including I and You, Émilie: La
Marquise Du Châtelet Defends Her Life Tonight, Parts
They Call Deep, and Background.
