Summer Concerts
 
The Summer Nights by Harbor Lights Summer Concert Series is
brought to you by the Milford Chamber of Commerce and the Law Firm
of Kapusta and Otzel. Friday nights the Rotary Pavilion at Fowler
Field comes alive with the sounds of a variety of local bands. The
music ranges from Big Band Swing to Rock and Roll. Bring a picnic
basket and a blanket and join us at these enjoyable events. The
bands start playing at 7 PM.
The Chamber of Commerce also sponsors the Holiday Festival
of Lights on the green the Friday after Thanksgiving and a Halloween
Parade at Fowler Field.

Milford Oyster Festival
This is perhaps the most highly anticipated event of the year in
Milford. This annual daylong event is held on the third Saturday
of August and regularly draws over 50,000 visitors and national
performers to downtown Milford. The event consists of an Arts and
Crafts Fair on the Green, Children's Entertainment, Canoe and Kayak
Races, A Classic Car Show and Swinging Soiree, and first class entertainment
with bands performing throughout the day on both the Mainstage and
the Emerging Artists Stage, culminating with the main act. Previous
headlining performers have included the Mark Farner Band, Orleans,
Jefferson Starship, Shangri-Las, Eight to the Bar and John Cafferty
and the Beaver Brown Band, to name a few. For more information,

Milford Fine Arts Council
Milford has a vibrant arts community, and the galvanizing
factor is the Milford Fine Arts Council. The Fine Arts Council
plays host to 3 plays a year, a coffee house, an intimate
jazz concert series, an arts and crafts fair on the Green
and numerous other activities. For more in depth information

Opening next spring will be the Firehouse Art Gallery near
Walnut Beach. This will offer gallery space for area artists
to display their works.

Meet the Artists and Artisans
 |
The twice yearly Meet the Artists and Artisans art and hand
craft show on the Green is well known throughout the nation.
The American Bus Association announced that the Spring and
Fall Meet the Artists and Artisans crafts fair has been named
one of the top 100 events in North America for the new millennium.

Personal Enrichment Classes
If you are looking to broaden your horizons, you might want to consider
taking a class through the Milford Adult Education program. They
offer classes on topics ranging from basket making and flower arranging
to Mediterranean Cooking and Investment Strategy. Browse their course

The recreation department also offers a number of classes and recreational
activities ranging from swing dancing to basketball and softball

Golf
Milford is home to two golf courses: The Orchards, a municipal 9
hole course, and Great River Golf Club (203) 876-8051), a Tommy
Fazio designed course. Grassy Hill Country Club (203) 795-3100)
and Oak Lane Country Club (203) 389-2135, both of which are 18 hole
golf courses are located in nearby.

Milford has ample recreational opportunities available to residents.
The city offers 24 ballfields, several indoor recreational facilities

Boating
With over 17 miles of coastline, it is not surprising 
that water activities are very popular. Boating is one of Milford's
favorite past times. There are a number of ways to enjoy Long
Island Sound and the Housatonic River. There are two public
Boat Launches. The city ramp is located at Fowler Field, in
downtown Milford and there is a state ramp on the Housatonic
River located off of Naugatuck Avenue in Devon under the I-95
overpass. There are fees to utilize both ramps. Boaters can either purchase a seasonal
pass or pay daily. For more information on the city ramp, contact
the Tax Collector at 783-3217 or Milford Landing Operations

Milford Landing Marina at the Head of the Harbor is a municipal
marina that offers visiting boaters several amenities, such
as concierge service, launch ramp, tennis and basketball courts,
pump out service, ice and water, electricity, laundering and
showering facilities and a barbecue area. For reservations,
contact (203) 874-1610. Residents can come and enjoy the picnic
tables, rose garden and landscaped walkway along the harbor
leading up to the Hotchkiss Memorial Footbridge, that crosses
the Harbor offering a breathtaking view of the waterfall underneath
the memorial bridge.

Milford Boat Works is a full service marina with a gas dock
and offers slips for transient boaters. The Milford Yacht Club is
another marina offering services for visiting boaters, such as a
swimming pool and showering facilities. In addition, there are numerous
private docks and facilities for the State Agricultural and National
Marine Fisheries laboratories in Milford Harbor.

There are five city beaches with lifeguard services and one
state park with a beach, offering life guard services.
Three of the beaches offer public parking (Walnut Beach, Gulf
Beach and Silver Sands). Residents can pick up their beach parking
stickers at the Milford Police Department, 430 Boston Post Road,
878-6551 (Hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM Monday through Friday). Visitors
pay per diem at the city beaches.
Silver Sands State Park currently has no parking fee. To access
Silver Sands State Park, take Exit 35 off of I-95, School House
Road. Go towards the Boston Post Road (Route 1). Take a left onto
Route 1. At your first light, take a right onto Silver Sands State
Parkway. Silver Sands has a wooden boardwalk and at low tide there
is a sand bar that connects Charles Island to Silver Sands Beach.
Charles Island is a 14-acre island that is rumored to hold Captain
Kid's buried treasure. The island is now a nature preserve and part
of Silver Sands State Park.

Kayaking
Many residents and visitors can be found exploring the harbor, Gulf
Pond and the marshes of the Housatonic River by kayak. If you do
not own your own kayak, you can rent from Tony's Bikes and Sports
at 108 Broad St., downtown Milford.

Connecticut Audubon Coastal Center
Opened in 1995, the Coastal Center is located on an 8.4 acre barrier
beach that is situated next to an 840 acre salt marsh, at the mouth
of the Housatonic River. 300 of the 399 bird species known to nest
in Connecticut have been observed from the observation decks and
observation towers of the Audobon Center. For more information on

| Sand
Castle Contest |
|

|
This
is one of the most popular annual events in Milford. Sponsored
by New Haven Savings Bank, the Sand Castle Contest draws hundreds
of participants who create sculptures that emerge from the
beach. If you want to enter bring a shovel and bucket. Categories
include Individuals, Family, Friends and Clubs. Trophies and
Cash Prizes are given in each category with a "best in
competition" award. There is no entry fee other than
a non-resident parking fee of $5.
